PopSugar LA Associate Editor

Sugar Inc. is looking for a celebrity and pop culture fanatic to join our PopSugar team as a Los Angeles Associate Editor. If you have relevant writing, interviewing and red carpet experience, devour your celebrity magazines every week, start your day by reading all the gossip blogs and are familiar with the PopSugar voice and brand then we'd love to meet you.

Responsibilities:

  • Cover and attend celebrity events, maintaining your own calendar and keeping track of all the important dates, names and faces
  • Secure celebrity interviews for the PopSugar Network and coordinate with our LA video team
  • Research and write multiple posts each day for PopSugar
  • Search, select and edit large galleries of images to accompany stories
  • Constantly monitor celebrity and pop culture related news
  • Collaborate with other PopSugar team members on daily content as well as larger projects
  • Evening and weekend work required

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years experience in writing/editing/blogging, on-line publishing or related field (required)
  • Experience interviewing celebrities in red carpet and one-on-one scenarios
  • A knowledge of online media, especially with respect to celebrity and pop culture
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced start-up environment

ENGINEERING

Web Application UI Engineer

Sugar Inc. seeks a talented Web Engineer with experience creating layouts using HTML/CSS and Ajax. You care as much about the look and flow of a site as you do about the details of implementation. You brainstorm, mock-up and iterate on design, and then implement to the point of pixel perfection. You have in-depth knowledge of the differences between IE6, IE7, IE8, Firefox, Safari and Chrome and plenty of experience building beautiful and elegantly designed sites that work across all these browsers. You know what sites you like and why, and can point to sites that you have brought to market. You enjoy working with a great team of developers in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement Web 2.0 features for our very popular websites.
  • Implement server-side components to these features using php5 and drupal.
  • Evolve feature and site ideas into well-structured architectural components.
  • Engage in design reviews with team members, partners, and users.

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage in UI design and review with team members, marketing and partners
  • Build UI and application logic in our app using Objective-C and the iPhone SDK
  • Participant in product definition with other groups in the company and partners.

There will also be opportunities to contribute to the JAVA API service that supports the iPhone client.

Operations Engineer

Sugar seeks a talented operations engineer who can engage in all aspects of deploying, managing, and scaling a high-traffic environment. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering to coordinate major releases, and have a passion for automation, monitoring, and exceptional troubleshooting skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage our deployment of web applications based on Apache/Lighttpd http servers, PHP and Java app servers, MySQL, and memcache.
  • Own scripts and tools for: kickstarting new servers, monitoring deployments, release build and push process.
  • Contribute to the long term evolution and scalability of our web sites.

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of Linux/Unix systems administration experience in a 24x7 environment

MARKETING

Promotional Marketing Manager

Sugar inc. is looking for a passionate, results-driven individual to manage our content marketing program. As our Promotional Marketing Manager, you will lead the consumer marketing efforts for our Content division and report to the Director of Marketing.

Responsibilities

  • Create and manage promotional campaigns to drive traffic to and within Sugar Inc.'s websites and grow email lists
  • Concept, implement, promote and fulfill contests and sweepstakes across all sites and through social media outlets
  • Direct the deisgn and components of current email campaigns, working with all internal stakeholders to develop requirements, specifications, features and functionality, scheduling, and implemention
  • Set up and monitor email marketing programs via email service provider
  • Identify new opportunities for email products and steward them through creation and implementation
  • Drive social media marketing campaigns and educate editorial staff on best practices
  • Work with graphic designers to develop effective designs for promotional materials
  • Work with ad traffic group to serve appropriate creative and obtain reporting
  • Set benchmarks for key performance criteria and review analytics to measure effectiveness
  • Report on performance of marketing campaigns and translate these results into program optimization

Qualifications

  • 3+ years online marketing experience
  • Knowledge of standard online marketing and advertising terms and concepts
  • Experience working on the marketing and/or editorial team of a publishing company a plus
  • Experience with email management/delivery system, and strong understanding of email distribution and deliverablity issues
  • Solid knowledge of internet technology and applications, email and database marketing infrastructures and the technologies required
  • Basic knowldege of Photoshop and HTML
  • Strong strategic and critical thinking abilities, written and verbal communication skills, creativity, and the ability to self-direct and be hands on
  • Bachelor's degree
